mTORC1 Inhibition Limits Apoptosis
Full text
Can slowing a cell-growth signal protect stressed cells, helping explain survival benefits linked to growth-signal suppression in mice? It asks whether blocking mTORC1, a growth-control protein complex, releases a pulse of protein kinase B (AKT), a survival signal, even when mitophagy, the removal of damaged mitochondria, is blocked.
The test asks whether mTORC1 inhibition brings the AKT pulse and less apoptosis, or programmed cell death, after repeated challenges. Researchers would then remove the treatment-induced AKT rise while holding mTORC1 inhibition comparable. Lost protection would support the AKT-mediated mechanism. Preserved protection would weaken it. This could distinguish shared protection across organs from delayed progression of one pathology.
