Lipid oxidation sustains gut-vascular damage
Full text
This proposed mechanism asks whether oxidized fats circulate damage between the gut and blood vessels, and whether a brief chemical interruption could stop the loop.
It predicts newly formed oxidized fats, fats altered by oxygen reactions, first in recipient tissue, then in gut tissue after the culture medium returns. Isotope labels would distinguish them from leftover material.
Damage activity should rebuild after dilution, persist when cells are prevented from dividing and when mineral particles are absent, then cease when lipid hydroperoxides, reactive oxidized fats, are selectively reduced. That pattern would distinguish the loop from rival explanations and give ageing research a target.
