Vesicle removal limits elastase damage
Full text
This proposed mechanism asks whether recovery across ageing-affected body systems depends on clearing tiny cell-released particles that carry tissue-damaging elastase, a protein-cutting enzyme.
It predicts that suppressing the EP2 cell receptor will still improve function when uptake of whole neutrophils, immune cells, is blocked, but only if macrophages, cells that engulf debris, remove elastase-bearing particles. Returning purified active particles should erase the benefit; equal inactive particles should preserve it. Testing requires measuring particle uptake, enzyme activity, tissue damage and function.
