Full scientific poster: Inflammation damages bacterial DNA

Full text

This proposed skin-healing mechanism asks whether a later phase of inflammation can limit bacterial regrowth and shorten the time until skin regains protection and tolerance of mechanical loading. The idea turns on deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA, the two-stranded genetic material bacteria use as a repair template. Damage at matching sites on both strands could leave bacteria unable to reconstruct the sequence, even when samples contain the same number of living microbes. This “damage geometry” might predict regrowth better than viable burden alone. Skin studied outside the body could track bacterial burden, lesion positions, inflammation and healing. If paired lesions predict regrowth after burden is counted, the mechanism gains support. If burden alone predicts outcome, it weakens.
