Interventions probe cultural transmission
Full text
How people learn, alter and pass on texts and rules may depend on six distinct processes, a hypothesis that can be tested rather than simply named.
The proposal separates organizing information for memory, retrieving and updating it, combining sources, tailoring expression to an audience, choosing among fixed versions, and shaping future exposure. Researchers would interrupt one dependency at a time with equally informative controls, then selectively restore it.
The decisive prediction is demanding: each removal must leave a distinctive effect in held-out tasks that every simpler merged model misses. Testing requires validated timing and intermediate states, then repetition in practical tasks and a second language.
