Reporting shapes menopause syndrome labels
Full text
Menopause care needs to know whether syndrome labels truly help choose treatment, or merely bundle problems that are reported together.
This proposed mechanism suggests that reporting patterns, care-seeking, and menopausal stage can create stable-looking categories from partly independent symptoms. It predicts a fixed label adds no useful guidance once each component’s starting severity and established clinical modifiers are known.
A test would recruit a cohort, randomly assign endocrine or nonendocrine treatment, and compare objective outcomes for each component. Questionnaire wording might shift category assignment while leaving treatment effects unchanged. Confidence intervals would need to rule out a useful benefit from the label; a nonsignificant interaction remains inconclusive.
