Musk says Neuralink will transmit information from the brain far faster than anyone can speak or type within a few years. The company reports that a participant in its speech trial reached 75 words per minute, compared with about 160 in ordinary conversation

Elon Musk posted this prediction on X on October 30, quoting a Neuralink thread about engineers spending three days prototyping features at the home of a participant in its speech trial. He said Telepathy, the company's first product, allows people to communicate quickly with computers and other people through thought alone.

The Neuralink implant records signals from the motor cortex, which sends commands to the muscles. Telepathy targets the hand area, allowing people with paralysis to control a cursor. The VOICE speech trial targets the speech area, where a decoder converts attempted speech into words. Thinking the command “Hey Neuralink” followed by a task activates the Grok AI agent, while the Bloom app feeds decoded speech into an iPhone call.

Neuralink measures cursor performance in bits per second (BPS) using the Webgrid game. Participants click highlighted cells in a grid: the larger the grid, the more bits each correct click contributes, with a deduction for missed clicks. According to the company, healthy people using a mouse average 8–10 BPS, and on October 1 it announced a participant record of 11,32. The company measures speech in words per minute. On October 28, it reported that one participant with ALS (a disease that destroys the nerve cells controlling muscles) reached 75 words per minute in the first week, with a word error rate of 5,8% using a vocabulary of 125 thousand words. The Stanford University speech implant described in a 2023 Nature paper achieved 62 words per minute with a 23,8% error rate using a vocabulary of the same size.

Musk put numbers to his prediction in August 2024 on Lex Fridman's podcast, when the cursor record was 8,5 BPS. He linked increases in speed to electrode counts and signal processing:

“I think in the coming years we'll start exceeding the world record by orders of magnitude. We'll reach, I don't know, 100 bits per second, a thousand. Perhaps in five years we'll be at a megabit, faster than any human can communicate by typing or speaking.”

According to Neuralink's June 2025 roadmap, the implant's electrode count will increase from 1000 to 3000 in 2026, around 10 000 in 2027, and more than 25 000 in 2028.

Neuroscientists Jieyu Zheng and Markus Meister compiled measurements spanning almost a century: the senses receive about a billion bits per second, while human behavior produces about ten. A skilled typist types 120 words per minute, or ten characters per second. English text is predictable enough that each character contributes about one bit, giving a total of about 10 bits/s. The authors call the belief that our inner lives are richer than what we can express the “Musk illusion” and predict that Musk's brain will communicate with a computer at the same 10 bits/s. They write:

“Instead of a bundle of Neuralink electrodes, Musk could simply use a phone: its data transmission rate is designed for human language, which in turn matches the speed of perception and thought.”

Neuroscientists Britton Sauerbrei and Andrew Pruszynski responded in Nature Neuroscience: the 10 bits/s limit appears to hold for higher-level thinking, but unconscious motor control substantially exceeds it. The disagreement concerns what limits communication speed: Musk places the limit in the fingers and voice, which the implant bypasses; Zheng and Meister place it in thought itself.

Musk himself compares cursor bits with typing and speech. Using Zheng and Meister's formula, typing yields about 10 bits/s, conversation at 160 words per minute yields about 13, and decoded speech at 75 words per minute yields about 6. The cursor record is 11,32, and Musk's targets are 100 and 1000 bits/s.
