Adaptyv Bio Raises $40 Million for an Automated Laboratory to Test AI-Designed Proteins

On August 25, Adaptyv Bio announced a $40 million investment in a round led by Highland Europe. The company plans to double its team in Lausanne and open an office and laboratory in London in the fourth quarter of 2026.

A computational model can propose many amino acid sequences, which provide the instructions for assembling proteins. Selecting the next batch requires testing these candidates in physical experiments. In the process described by Adaptyv Bio, each digital sequence is converted into DNA, which is then used to produce the protein without living cells. The laboratory measures whether the protein binds to the selected target and assesses the quality of the measurement. These results allow researchers to compare candidates and decide which sequences should proceed to the next round of testing.

Adaptyv Bio previously performed this work in Claude's campaign involving 1 320 miniproteins for 15 targets. Anthropic sent the final sequences to Adaptyv Bio and Twist Bioscience. The two laboratories independently produced the proteins and tested whether they bound to the selected targets. The company will now use the funding to expand the laboratory that feeds these measurements into the next design cycle.

Users submit sequences through the website or API, which allows one program to send requests to another. The laboratory runs the tests and returns the results. According to the company's documentation, the first data are available in approximately 21 days.

The company's blog states:

“AI can move only as fast as the experiments that support it.”
