Dario Amodei announced that Anthropic is rapidly expanding its work in biology and medicine, linking trust in AI to curing disease

On 15 August, Anthropic’s CEO wrote that the company is rapidly expanding its work in biology and medicine. It hopes to see the first signs of progress in the coming months, followed by impressive results in the years ahead.

Amodei was responding to criticism that he talks too often about the risks of AI. He attributed distrust of the field to a long history of distrust toward companies, governments, and the technology industry. In his view, people begin to trust a technology when it produces results they can see in their own lives.

He gave curing cancer as an example of such a result. In his full response, Amodei stated the point directly: “One thing will work: actually curing cancer.”

Amodei applied the same standard to his own company. “We have not yet delivered on our major promises to benefit the world. That is entirely our responsibility,” the Anthropic CEO wrote.

In June, Anthropic announced its own preclinical programs for neglected diseases. Amodei has now described the pace he wants this work to follow:
