Vivodyne announces the launch of 12 robotic laboratories with a stated capacity of up to 3.1 million experiments on human tissue per year

On August 12, the company unveiled 12 HIVE robotic laboratories for experiments on cultured human tissue, along with TissueDisk, a plate that can grow hundreds of samples in parallel. Vivodyne says the combined system will be able to conduct up to 3.1 million controlled experiments per year.

During the early stages of drug development, researchers must choose which protein or other component of a biological system the drug will target, what form the drug will take, and what dose to test. Vivodyne automates these experiments in living human tissue.

TissueDisk grows hundreds of independent tissue samples at the same time. Researchers can test a different condition in each sample, such as exposure to a drug. HIVE is a robotic laboratory that runs these experiments for weeks. The equipment captures three-dimensional images and measures gene activity and the set of proteins present in the tissue to determine how it responds to a given intervention. Vivodyne describes this combination as a system for growing, treating, and studying many tissue samples in parallel.

On August 10, Aureka described a similar cycle in which laboratory measurements are fed back into a model that selects the next molecule. Vivodyne applies the same principle across many experimental conditions. Hivemind, the company’s software, uses results from previous experiments to set the conditions for the next one.

“Each human tissue response gives our AI something it cannot learn from a paper or a simulation: living tissue that it can perturb and learn from the response,” said Vivodyne CEO and co-founder Andrei Georgescu.
