OpenAI Offers Academic Researchers Free Access to ChatGPT, Codex, and Shared Workspaces
On July 29, OpenAI launched the ChatGPT for Academic Researchers program for selected universities. The program will begin with 10 thousand researchers this summer, and the company plans to reach 100 thousand by 2027.
Research rarely fits into a single conversation with a model. A laboratory may spend weeks reading papers, comparing data, writing code, revisiting calculations, and preparing an application. The OpenAI program gives participants free access to models, higher usage limits, and a shared workspace. Each approved researcher can invite up to four colleagues from the same institution.
Codex writes and debugs code, analyzes datasets, and builds reproducible workflows. Deep research reviews the literature and prepares summaries, while ChatGPT Work supports extended writing tasks, including grant searches, applications, literature reviews, and article drafts. The laboratory gains a workspace where several colleagues can return to the same documents, data, and calculations, instead of receiving isolated answers from the model.
For the life sciences, OpenAI lists more than 75 ready-made skills, including genetics, genomics, sequencing, single-cell data analysis, protein modeling, and drug discovery. Connectors link the workspace to scientific papers, public genomic and clinical databases, computational notebooks, and reference managers. This allows one group to move from publications and raw data to code that another researcher can run again.
In aging research, these tasks often appear together: comparing genomic datasets, identifying changes in individual cells, finding relevant literature, and preparing an analysis that can be used to repeat the experiment. The new program gives university groups access to these tools, along with training and support for integrating them into laboratory workflows.
The initial group will include 10 thousand researchers. The target of 100 thousand by 2027 remains OpenAI's stated plan. SiliconANGLE also reported on the launch of the initial group.
