Demis Hassabis hands daily management of Google DeepMind to Koray Kavukcuoglu and will focus on Isomorphic Labs

On August 5, Alphabet placed Koray Kavukcuoglu in charge of Google DeepMind's daily operations. Demis Hassabis remains the lab's chair, has become Alphabet's chief scientist, and continues to lead Isomorphic Labs.

According to Alphabet's announcement, Kavukcuoglu will oversee Google DeepMind's daily work, including Gemini development, advanced research, the Gemini app, and developer teams. Hassabis will advise these teams.

In his statement, Hassabis explained the change as follows:

“This role will allow me to focus on long-term strategy, accelerating scientific breakthroughs, and working more deeply at Isomorphic to help treat disease.”

Isomorphic Labs applies machine learning to drug development. According to the company's website, its models represent complex biological processes, help design new molecules, and predict how drugs will behave in the body. Hassabis's deeper involvement at Isomorphic therefore means working on the development and evaluation of potential drugs.

Kavukcuoglu is responsible for DeepMind's daily operations, while Hassabis is responsible for Alphabet's long-term strategy and Isomorphic Labs. In his statement, Hassabis directly connected his deeper involvement at Isomorphic with helping to treat disease.
