Kai Micah Mills: Antimortality and the Goal Shift in Longevity

“Death is the only real problem”: Kai Micah Mills releases Antimortality and accuses the longevity field of changing its goal

While the market debates how to add “+2 years of healthspan,” Kai Micah Mills (CryoDAO, CryoPets) is forcing a harsher question back onto the agenda: are we still trying to defeat death at all, or have we simply learned to manage decline more effectively?

In the text/project Antimortality, he lays out this framework for how the goal has shifted over recent decades:
• Cosmism: death is an error, resurrection is a moral duty
• Transhumanism: the goal is still radical, but the ethical core is weakening
• Longevity: “not dying” is replaced by “living longer”
• Healthspan: the final version is “dying later and more comfortably”

Mills’s core thesis is this: death is not a metaphysical given, but a failure state. Not a fate we should learn to accept with dignity, but a technical and moral malfunction that should be fixed. In that logic, antimortality is not about “living better before death,” but about removing death itself as an obligatory outcome.

The most controversial but also central passage is his critique of “digital immortality through copying.” In Mills’s view, even a perfect duplicate is not the restoration of the person who died. For him, this is not a philosophical quibble but the key ethical test for the entire debate around consciousness, mind uploading, and “personhood successors.”

Why the text resonates right now: the industry has become extremely good at monetizing managed aging: biomarkers, trackers, protocols, subscriptions, clubs. All of that may be useful, but for most of these solutions the endpoint has not changed: death remains the norm, only more delayed and more “tidy.” Mills calls this normalization deathism - an ideology in which death is not glorified, but accepted as an appropriate ending.

You can argue with that maximalism. But the fact that it has returned matters in itself: inside the longevity field, the question of the goal is being asked again. Are we building a service economy of comfort around an inevitable end, or the infrastructure that might one day make that end optional?
