MUVON cell therapy benefit persisted at one year in 12 women

9 October 2026· YbIm0dLx

All 12 six-month responders among 13 women assessed maintained improvement at one year in MUVON's phase two trial, but follow-up remains incomplete and the reported comparison between doses cannot establish how much improvement the treatment caused.

All 12 women who benefited from cell therapy at six months and reached the one-year assessment maintained their improvement. This interim report covers 13 of the phase two trial's 30 participants.

Swiss biotechnology company MUVON released the results on October 7. It is testing a treatment for stress urinary incontinence, which causes urine leakage during coughing, laughing, or physical exertion.

The treatment uses the patient's own cells. Muscle progenitor cells are grown from a small sample of her calf muscle, then injected through the urethra into the external urethral sphincter under ultrasound guidance. This sphincter holds urine in by contracting. The procedure aims to restore that ability.

At one year, the 12 participants who had benefited at six months had 79% fewer incontinence episodes and 85% less urine leakage than at baseline. These measures show symptom improvement; by themselves, they do not confirm that muscle tissue regenerated. The company also reports preserved tissue integrity and no serious adverse events related to the treatment or procedure in all participants assessed at one year.

The trial randomly assigned women to two cell doses. The lower dose had already been tested in phase one, while the higher dose is now being assessed for efficacy. The study description reports only a comparison between doses. The material includes no comparison with a group receiving no cell therapy, so these data make it difficult to separate the treatment's effect from other possible reasons for improvement. For now, the one-year follow-up confirms that improvement persisted in 12 participants. Assessing the proportion of all 30 women with a sustained benefit requires follow-up data from the remaining participants.

Why this was published

This item turns the Eternal Search glossary entry on cell therapy into a concrete clinical example: a patient's own muscle progenitor cells are injected into the urethral sphincter, with symptom outcomes now reported through one year.
