James Harris Simons (April 25, 1938 to May 10, 2024), widely known as Jim Simons, was an American mathematician, hedge fund founder and philanthropist. He founded Renaissance Technologies, one of the most successful quantitative investing firms in history, after an academic career that included chairing the mathematics department at Stony Brook University. With his wife Marilyn, he also built the Simons Foundation and other philanthropic vehicles that became major funders of mathematics, basic science, autism research and STEM education.
