Shinya Yamanaka is a Japanese physician-scientist best known for discovering induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, work that earned him the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He is Director Emeritus and Professor at the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) at Kyoto University, Senior Investigator at Gladstone Institutes, and Professor of Anatomy at UC San Francisco. He also serves as president of the CiRA Foundation and has held scientific advisory roles connected to translational regenerative-medicine efforts.
