Sydney Brenner was a South African molecular biologist and 2002 Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine, recognized for helping establish Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism for genetic regulation of organ development and programmed cell death. He worked at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, later founded the Molecular Sciences Institute, and held roles at Scripps and other research institutions. He also advised and consulted for biotech efforts, giving him outsized influence on the biotechnology ecosystem.
